SHIP AND SHORE RAMP CHARACTERISTICS. PROPOSALS TO ISO/TC8/SC19 TO AMEND ISO DRAFT PROPOSALS DP 6812/2 CONCERNING THE HEIGHT OF SHORE RAMPS

ICHCA's submission to ISO/TC8/SC19 is concerned with the eventual drafting of an ISO standard for roll-on/roll-off shore ramps. One existing proposal presently on the table for discussion is to have the fixed ramps Class A and Class B at differing heights to cope with variations in load draft and tidal range. ICHCA's comments are based upon extensive computer analysis of ship and ramp data undertaken by the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash (Southampton University). ICHCA concludes that two fixed shore ramps at different heights only marginally increase the number of vessels which may be served and thus recommends a single fixed shore ramp located at low level for ports with a limited range of water level variation. Comments are made on the range required for an adjustable shore ramp to cope with varying percentages of existing ships.
