PLANETARY GEARS TAKE ON NEW JOBS
Designers are finding that planetary gears can minimize size and cost of drives. Other advantages include lower overall weight, tooth loadings and pitch-line velocities, and in-line arrangement of input and ouput shafts. A roundup is given of new applications and arrangements with speed-ratio equations. Some of the newer applications of planetary gears are in merchant-ship gas turbines and in the wheel drives of agricultural and off-highway equipment.
