COST OF RAILWAY ELECTRIFICATION AND SYSTEM OPTIONS

This paper sets out the cost of railway electrification based on recent British Railways (B.R.) experience with a variety of schemes and system options both in the U.K. and abroad. Costs are related to the choice of system, the method of construction, the type of route and the availability of electrical supplies. Prices quoted are in sterling at mid-1978 price levels. The costs detailed in this paper are for the electrification element of a railway modernization scheme and thus costs for depots, resignalling and route rationalization/improvement are not included. With the exception of lower-voltage dc schemes the cost of the fixed works for railway electrification is about 50,000 pounds per single-track kilometre.
