MODERN RAILWAY ELECTRIFICATION AND THE COST BENEFITS

A review of railway operations throughout the world shows that railways are utilizing growing fleets of electric locomotives for their haulage requirements in many countries. The United States is a major exception with only one main line extension in recent years. The return on the electrification investment can be about 20% with savings in maintenance, long equipment life and higher availability. Petroleum savings and energy independence are additional benefits of electrification.
