STRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF STEEL FOR RAILS

The properties of pearlitic rail steels are governed by the geometrical structure parameters interlamellar spacing and cementite lamella thickness and by grain size. Alloying elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese or chromium affect indirectly the properties through their influence on the structure parameters. Addition of vanadium leads also in pearlitic steels to precipitation hardening.
