C & NW WORKS ON FUEL EFFICIENCY

Chicago and North Western has been testing various prime movers on lower-horsepower locomotives with the aim of achieving greater fuel economy. It has compared a Sulzer 1500-hp four-cycle engine against two types of two-cycle engines in a carefully monitored road test and is installing a Cummins 1800-hp engine on another general-purpose unit. Also tested was a two-engine switching locomotive with small commercial diesels that need not be idled in cold weather.
