RESULTS FROM A STUDY ON THE STRENGTH OF THE DECK STRUCTURES OF RO-RO SHIPS

Deck structures of ro/ro ships usually consist of grillages formed by the deck transverse and girders, and these transverses are directly acted upon by the weight of the edges of containers and by the axle loads of trailers. Part of the weight on the transverses is taken by the deck girders, and the position and rigidity of these mainly determine the strength of the deck structure. The Author presents a new method for calculating the approximate strength of such deck structures. Results obtained with the method have been found to agree with those from a grillage analysis using a computer. The article also describes the investigation of the optimum positions and scantlings of the deck girders with the new method.
