GOOD STEERING PROPERTIES FOR CONTAINER SHIPS

In this survey, from the operator's viewpoint, of propeller/rudder arrangements for container ships, the Author (of the Nedlloyd Group) includes much information applicable to other types of ship. The general characteristics of the three generations of container ships are summarised, with particular reference to their steering properties at sea, and, where relevant, in the Suez and Panama Canals. The single-rudder/twin-screw arrangement used in many second and third generation container-ships is then discussed in some detail. There are three basic variations of this arrangement: (a) semi-balanced rudder and open skeg, ("barndoor") rudder and closed skeg. The comparative merits of these variations are examined, and the historical development and present-day advantages of the barndoor-rudder/closed-skeg combination are discussed. Other aspects of the twin-screw/single-rudder arrangement that are considered include: rudder-bearing forces and wear; the design of stock-to-rudder and stock-to-tiller connections; some reservations about test results; addition of wing rudders; stern thrusters; steering with the propellers and the effect of converging shafts. The twin-rudder twin-screw arrangement is far superior to any single-rudder arrangement for low-speed steering in shallow water, and should always be adopted for such short-voyage ships as ferries and supply boats. Advantages and drawbacks of this arrangement for ships engaged in the longer voyages are discussed. The twin-rudder twin-screw arrangement with twin skegs, and the triple-screw single-rudder arrangement as exemplified in the container-ship Selandia are similarly examined.
