STEAM PROPULSION FOR SHIPS IN THE CHANGING ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT
Sponsored by The Institute of Marine Engineers, this Conference was designed to update senior executives of shipping companies and shipyards on the many developments in steam propulsion systems for various types of ships in the 9,000 to 70,000 hp power range. Comparison was made with alternative methods of propulsion for which advocates spoke during the discussion periods, providing balanced information and viewpoints. The conference examined operating costs and the economic aspects of several new advanced steam cycles proposed by Stal-Laval Turbin AB of Sweden and the General Electric Company of the U.S.A. Technical aspects of the new systems were discussed. This Report of the Conference includes discussions and authors' written replies. It is a unique and valuable source of reference for all who are concerned with the far reaching effects that the new ships will have on the future of world shipping.
