SEGMENTALIZED TANKERS TO REDUCE OIL DISASTERS FOLLOWING DAMAGE AT SEA

TANKER IM SEGMENTBAUWEISE SOLLEN OELKATASTROPHEN BEI HAVARIE VERRINGERN.

An alternative model for the construction of oil tankers is diagrammed. Basically, the ship consists of many independent, floatable segments conceived of as segregated ballast tanks with special breaking zones, which can combine or reassemble into a complete ship. At the time of a stranding or collision accident this ship can be separated into single segments by a force produced by impact or by a suitable uncoupling mechanism, thereby reducing the environmental pollution. The cargo from a leaking segment can be transferred into an intact tank using a pump system. The permanent ballast tanks are a form of emergency tank.
