SOMEL SYSTEM: COMPUTER AIDS FOR THE FABRICATION OF STRUCTURAL STEEL

In the structural steel industry, fabricators convert rolled-steel sections and plate, bought from the mill, into structures and erect them on site. The design is often done by an outside organisation, which translates it into a form suitable for use by the operators of the cutting and drilling machines; for much of the work, this consists of numerical lists. The Somel system enables the draughtsmen, who normally initiate the process, to directly produce these lists, together with supplementary drawings where additional explanation is required for use in assembly. The Author, of Cadsteel Ltd, Cheadle, Chesire, describes this computer-aided system and its seven linked programs, and discusses its effect on drawing-office organisation and the benefits it offers.
