DYNAMIC STIFFNESS OF GROUP OF BATTERED PILES

The substructure procedure described by J.P. Wolf and G.A. von Arx in "Impedance Function of a Group of Vertical Piles"- for all modes of vibration, is extended to a group of battered piles. The formulation is streamlined, thus extending the field of application to new cases for vertical piles by eliminating certain assumptions: (1) no approximations are introduced if the group consists of end-bearing and floating piles of different lengths and different radii; (2) the individual piles can be tapered and have a polygonal axis; and (3) the material properties can change along the axis of the piles. In addition, all cavities where the soil is subsequently replaced by the piles are rigorously accounted for. The number of steady-state analyses of the axisymmetric soil model for a 3-dimensional foundation is also reduced by a factor of two as compared to that of the earlier work. The mathematical formulation also applies to (3-dimensional) embedded foundations and buried structures. The assumptions which apply and the mathematical formulations are detailed.
