PENETRABILITY FOR DISCRIMINATING IN ROCK AND SOIL

A simple extension of the SPT has contributed to the delineation of interlayered depost is of soft rock and hard soil where cave recovery is nil or very low. This paper reports the investigation of a cement plant producing 2,000,000 tons yearly, for which equipment manufacturers would not quarantee proper functioning of rotary kilns unless settlement of supports was zero. Subsurface geological conditions, the correlation of penetrability with rock or soil, and the differentiation obtained with penetrability are discussed. Penetrability was found readily applicable and most useful in an erratic rock soil terrain, for identifying rock and soil, sharpening of subsurface profiles and investigating the rock masses.
