CONTINUOUS POWER SUPPLY INSTALLATIONS FOR THE INTEGRATED TRANSPORTATION CONTROL SYSTEM OF THE WEST GERMAN RAILROAD SYSTEM

The integrated transport control system comprises 79 data concentrators that assure continuous operation, even when a failure of power supply occurs. Therefore they have been equipped with solid-state continuous power supply installation (UEV installations). A solid state UEV installation consists of a rectifier and a series-connected inverter, seen in the direction of energy flow. A totally enclosed lead battery working in stand-by parallel operation serves as a spare energy source. It is rated to bridge time gaps up to 15 min or 60 min. In case of an inverter failure, the data concentrator can be switched without any interruption to line supply by means of an electronic switching device (EUE). The article gives a description of rectifier, inverter, EUE battery and switching circuit, including their construction and operation.
