The design of fendering systems, which protect bridge piers against ship impact or at minimum retard direct collision, has utilized basic fundamentals of physics and simple pile equilibrium. Such assumptions can often lead to grossly overdesigned systems or, in some cases, inaccurate force evaluation in the entire support system. In order to improve the state of the art and provide accurate design data, and still maintain simplistic design, a comprehensive design study has been initiated.
