CASH CRISIS AS APT ENTERS SERVICE
As British Rail prepares to put its glamorous new Advanced Passenger Train (APT) into trial revenue service, the system faces a crisis of investment. Equipment bought during the post-war renewal and modernization programs is coming to the end of its useful life. Just to keep pace with the existing need for renewal of rolling stock and fixed installations requires 340 million pounds a year more than BR is getting in investment capital.
