TWIN BOXES INTERACT ACROSS THE OGMORE

This article describes the design and construction to date of the Ogmore Viaduct, South Wales, carrying the M4 motorway over road A4063 and the River Ogmore. Reference is made to the unusual design feature of a twin box beam structure supported on staggered columns and connected by transverse I-Beams. The viaduct is founded on siltstone, piling being necessary at the west end of site. The extensive support scaffolding for the boxes and transverse beams over land and across the river is described. Details are included of planned stages of construction including sequence for application of prestress to the boxes and the transverse beams. (TRRL)
