This report presents a "state-of-the-art" review on Australian usage of marginal quality aggregates for road construction purposes, including road base and surfacing aggregates. An introductory section on Australian climatic and traffic conditions is followed by notes on Australian materials - quarried rock, gravels and soils. Standard specifications in use in each state are briefly compared to define "marginal" materials and detailed sections on the classification of such materials, treatment processes for upgrading them, and case history examples of their use are presented. The report outlines modifications to traditional design and construction techniques which contribute to the successful utilisation of marginal quality aggregates and concludes with recommendations for further research on the description and classifications of materials and on a national materials data bank.
