A footpath network to segregate pedestrians from traffic needs to be attractive, and subways should be safer, have easy access, and be of good overall design. This article describes a mini-bridge type subway consisting of two trapezium shaped blocks of in situ concrete carrying a monolithic deck slab. The importance of surface finishes is stressed and the overall design and standard of lighting is considered. The aesthetic appearance of installations and their location to prevent vandalism is emphasised. The design and construction of the luminaires, and the materials used are considered in some detail, noting the need for protection against weather, corrosion and vandalism. (TRRL)
