BEHAVIOUR OF INITIALLY DEFORMED CONTINUOUS PLATING UNDER NORMAL PRESSURE

An approximate method has been developed for the analysis of two span plate strips making allowances for initial imperfections, small axial movement at the edges and yielding. In most cases the load-deflection curve can be obtained for all stages of loading. The effect of axial movement both before and during the application of the transverse pressure can be allowed for. An experimental program has been described which shows the importance of initial imperfections and axial movement at the edges of plate strips on their behavior. A tentative design method has been proposed for long plates subjected to normal pressure. An approximate method is proposed, which makes an allowance for the presence of a shear stress in the plane of the plating, and for a direct stress acting in the long direction of the plate.
