Today automated container handling is not a realistic total alternative to manually controlled operations. Rather, it is a tool to be employed in conjunction with conventional handling methods given the right operational circumstances. Even so, the development, installation and successful operation of handling equipment to be used in this semiautomated fashion calls for a high standard of management expertise particularly in the sphere of handling equipment selection. So say a number of terminal operators around the world who are either presently operating semiautomated handling systems or who, like International Transportation Services and Matson Terminals in the USA, are in the process of introducing them.
