REINFORCEMENT OF BEARING STRENGTH OF LAKE ICE

FOERSTAERKNING AV ETT ISTAECKES BAERFOERMAAGA MED ARMERING

To investigate the possibility of reinforcing lake ice with wood and steel bars a number of tests were made on the covering of ice on a small lake. Totally 48 load tests were made on ice beams with and without reinforcement. At the same time extension tests of the bars were made. The bearing strength of the ice depends on its flexural tensile strength because ice, like concrete, has the weakness that tensile strength only is a fraction of the compression strength. The results show that reinforcement leads to higher resistance against cracking. Very small amounts of reinforcement are demanded. (TRRL)
