FULL-FACE BORING OF LARGE DIAMETER TUNNELS IN SOLID ROCK WITH "MOLE" MACHINE

IZRADA TUNELA U CVRSTOJ STIJENI STROJEM ZA BUSENJE PUNOG PROFILA ("KRTICA")

Mechanised full-face boring of tunnels of large diameters in solid rock has become a reality in Yugoslavia. The article refers to the tunnel for water supply (length 9.5 km, diameter 7.1 M) for hydro power plant "zakucac II". The "Mole" in question was a Robins Model. 230-171 weighing 325 tonnes and rated at 1000 kw installed motor power. The article describes the machine itself and its operation at this site. The particular geological features of the karst sub strata of the region, caused difficulties, expense and loss of time. The article also includes the principal pros and cons for various tunnelling machines. (TRRL)
