THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ROADS ON OUTSTANDINGLY DIFFICULT SITES

PROJEKTOVANJE I IZGRADNJA PUTEVA U IZRAZITO TESKIM TERENIMA

The article describes the topography and geology of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Problems and difficulties which occur in the course of designing and constructing roads over difficult ground in Bosnia and herzegovina are dealt with as well as experience gained after opening the roads to traffic. Experience on road sections Mesici-Ustipraca, Lapsnica (Sarajevo)-Ljubogoste and Miljevinabrod na Drini, all difficult routes in canyon regions, are described. Details of the alignment and cross sections are given and an assessment of the design solutions and quantities of earthworks. Finally, based upon experience, recommendations and conclusions are included which are of interest for wider discussion at the Congress. In addition to recommendations of technical nature, the authors suggest that in such difficult terrains as these, in planning investment outlay, a sum should be provided for extras which may be as high as 30 per cent. Due to the inaccessibility and impossibility of carrying out detailed exploratory work in advance, all the highway features cannot be included at the design stage. (TRRL)
