THE FUTURE OF CITIES

The book presents papers on the theme of the planning of the future city from five viewpoints. Section 1 - the future city as seen in the past - incorporates the literary and design utopias which have influenced present-day urban planners. Section 2 - trends and constraints - presents the view of the forecaster and concentrates on the future city likely to emerge if present trends in urban and transport development continue. Section 3 - future urban forms - examines the continuing trend of urban dispersal and offers alternatives to extremes of high density and low density settlements. The viewpoint of section 4 - planning the future city - is that city planning is not just a physical process but also a political one. It is the urban planners task to effect the political will by ensuring that the desired redistribution is achieved. Section 5 - life in the city of the future - expresses the viewpoint of the individual inhabiting the city of the future. Each city described manifests the progress of technology and provides an incentive to influence the process of urban development towards a more humane future. (TRRL)
