AN ECONOMICAL METHOD OF DESIGNING STRUCTURALLY CONTINUOUS BRIDGES AND AQUEDUCTS

The advantages of a continuous structure tend to get nullified if it is continuous over only one support, on the other hand, maintaining continuity over large-span lengths pose problems from the point of view of expansion and contraction. The author attempts in the paper, to suitably modify design procedures so as to achieve continuity over one pier only, at the same time, reduce span length and thus bending moments as well. Significant reductions in quantities of materials used, as compared to the conventional double-cantilever method of construction are claimed. (Author/TRRL)
