CONCERNING VISIBILITY CONDITIONS IN RELATION TO UPHILL GRADIENTS ON HIGHWAYS
SULLE CONDIZIONI DI VISIBILITA IN CORRISPONDENZA DEI DOSSI STRADALI
A methodology is presented for evaluating visibility conditions in relation to vertical crests on ordinary single carriageway roads. Special attention is paid to the question of intermediate visibility between stopping distances and overtaking distances, and a mathematical definition is presented prescribing the zones in which an overtaking manoeuvre already begun can be finished, but no new one initiated. The vertical transition curves developed in this paper are based on the Italian CNR standards for road layout, but it is pointed out that they can be applied in relation to any other highway design standards.
