ROAD LIGHTING FIVE YEARS ON - PROBLEMS, PROGRAMS AND POTENTIAL IN A METROPOLITAN COUNTY COUNCIL

South Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council's new lighting responsibilities under the Local Government Act 1972 are explained, and details of its lighting policy are included. The structure of the county's lighting department with its management control lines is illustrated. The author gives details of lighting maintenance programmes which have been developed, and has tabulated the annual expenditure on improvement schemes. Estimated costs are given for the replacement of obsolete lighting units, and lighting improvement programmes e.g., changeover to low pressure sodium lighting, are included. Reference is made to the introduction of photoelectric switching and to energy conservation. A description is given of the county's road safety unit which undertakes accident analysis and investigation. The effect of road lighting on night time accident rate is noted. (TRRL)
