POWERVANE - A UNIQUE TBM
A compressed air driven tunnelling machine known as the Powervane introduced by Marcon International is said to drive small diameter tunnels as cheaply as hand driving with a shield. The equipment is a fully mechanised drum digger driven by compressed air and includes a semi-oscillating cutting head motor and a hollow spool pneumatic propulsion ram. The compressed air driven cutting motor produces low-speed rotation at high torque. Spoil removal is by a rotating screw onto a belt conveyor. The compressed air system is fed by a 17 cu m/min capacity compressor which gives a 100 tonne load on the hollow spool ram at the tunnel face. (TRRL)
