NEW TYPES OF TREATMENT WITH BITUMINOUS MIXTURES FOR AIRPORT RUNWAYS

NUOVI TIPI DI INTERVENTI CON CONGLEOMERATI BITUMINOSI PER SOVRASTRUTTURE AEROPORTUALI

After reviewing the basic problems of durability, serviceability and maintenance of airfield runways, this paper describes two types of bituminous treatment used with great success in the USA, United Kingdom and Scandinavia in recent years. The treatments in question are: (1) the crack relief layer which is applied over an old cracked surface before repaving; and (2) the porous asphalt friction course which is a surface treatment designed to prevent aquaplaning. Both these treatments have been used for the first time in Italy on the Istrana Military Airfield, Treviso, in 1976. The article describes research, and laboratory and field tests carried out in Italy to reproduce these two types of bituminous mixture physical and rheologic characteristics.
