The increase in traffic flows on the main western radial route in Southampton led to the planning and construction of grade separations at Millbrook and Redbridge roundabouts. Each flyover is curved in plan and carries dual two-lane carriageways. Details are given of stage construction of the post-tensionsed in-situ concrete decks with twin-cell box spines mounted on reinforced concrete piers with piled foundations. Mention is made of the surface finishing of the concrete structures, and of the precast parapets with Californian type vehicle-deflecting profile on the inner face. Temporary traffic arrangements are described, including automatic visual and audible warning of height restrictions during construction. Details are included of design features for controlling and encouraging pedesrian movement in the area. Reference is made to precautions taken to comply with noise regulations during pile driving, and to public participation in the scheme.
