A CONTRIBUTION TO THE CHARACTERIZATION OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS

CONTRIBUTO ALLA CARATTERIZZAZIONE DEI LEGANTI IOROCARBURATI

Criteria are described which have enabled the restriction to a limited number, of the complexity of experimental parameters used to characterise bituminous binders. Based on a study of 25 binders for each of which 14 parameters were measured, three "characters" were identified which retained at least 90% of the representative information: A) a consistency character (stiffness, softening point, viscosity, penetration); B) a composition character (insolubility in heptane, specific weight, volatility); and C) a temperature behaviour character (frass point, thermal susceptibility). The classification of binders according to these proposed representative parameters has two advantages: a saving of laboratory time since fewer tests are needed, and simpler development of data since the size of the matrices will be reduced. In addition it is claimed that this method of classification is more consistent and universal for the great variety of binders, and is more easily applicable to road construction practice. (TRRL)
