BEHAVIOUR OF THE EXPERIMENTAL EMBANKMENT "B" IN CUBZAC-LES-PONTS

COMPORTEMENT DU REMBLAI EXPERIMENTAL "B" CUBZAC-LES-PONTS

The LCPC experimental site at Cubzac-les-Ponts, on the bank of the Dordogne River, comprises three experimental embankments on compressible soil. Embankment "b" was built in 1975 to study soil consolidation for the normal safety coefficient value (F = 1,5). Detailed geotechnical investigations on-site and the number of the measuring devices in the embankment subgrade enabled experimental data to be used to test consolidation and creep theories, and methods of calculating settlements and lateral deformations of the subgrade. This article describes the geotechnical characteristics of the Cubzac mud, the construction of the embankment, results of displacement and pore water pressure measurements over 2 years, and compares results of different conventional calculations (oedometer test, terzaghi method) or less conventional techniques (two-dimensional consolidation, modified "cam clay" elastoplastic model) with experimental results.
