Rural Transport, Volume 1

There is increasing awareness of the role of rural transportation and infrastructure in raising rural communities out of poverty. Rural road programs in China and India demonstrate their governments' commitment to economic and social development through improved accessibility. Rural living standards are raised by the provision of affordable all-year access to towns and services, enabling quicker movement of agricultural products to markets. This IRF Bulletin presents articles by leaders in rural transportation research and practice, with sections on the socioeconomic benefits of rural transportation projects, road construction and management, road safety, and animal-powered transportation.
