VISIBILITY STUDY - APPLICATIONS TO HIGHWAY TUNNELS
ETUDE DE LA VISIBILITIE - APPLICATIONS AUX TUNNELS ROUTIERS
An attempt is made to link the results of visibility measurements taken in the laboratory and in-situ. Simple laboratory experiments are recalled, and an approximate relation is established between visibility conditions in the laboratory and in-situ using the universal curve of relative contrast sensitivity. This relation is used to derive a formula giving the visibility distance of a typical obstacle as a function of its environment (especially as a function of opacity). Some numerical applications of the formula are described. (TRRL)
