STUDDED TYRES AND THEIR USE IN FINLAND. A REPORT OF RESEARCH CARRIED OUT FROM 1973 TO 77

TUTKIMUKSIA LIIKENTEESSAE KAEYTETYISTAE NASTARENKAISTA JA NIIDEN KAEYTOESTAE VUOSINA 1973-77

The report deals with the wear of pavements, skid resistance of studded tyres, the effects of protrusion of studs and stud forces, and traffic studies dealing with the use of studded tyres on different vehicles, the length of the period studded tyres are used, vehicle mileage with studded tyres, the number and state of studs and studded tyres, the protrusion of studs and stud forces in tyres on cars and trucks, and the influence of studded tyres on driving habits and traffic safety. The ratio of stud force and protrusion decreased with increase in the number of kilometres covered and decreased during the period of study. With smaller original protrusion and stud force, studs seem to last longer and maintain their protrusion longer. Cars without studded tyres drive only slightly slower than cars with studded tyres but during bad weather the difference becomes more significant. The studs on trucks had no influence on speed.
