THE NATIONAL BUS COMPANY "MAP" MARKET ANALYSIS PROJECT. 2 COLLECTING AND PRESENTING THE DEMAND INFORMATION

The article, the second in a series of three, emphasises the importance of on-bus surveys to identify passenger needs, and household surveys to determine the attitudes of the general public. The development of the method used for the viable network project (VNP) is described. The four components are: survey preparation, the survey, post-survey and data processing. A simple questionnaire - completed by the passenger during the journey - formed the basis of the survey. In addition, control data collected is related to that gained by the survey to establish a basic sample to population ratio. The basis of the data processing is the ICL survey analysis program XDSE. Other purpose-built software is used to provide a separate zonal, geographic and demographic printout. Examples are given of the use of the output tables which provide a wide range of demand information to aid the planning of services. (TRRL)
