MEASUREMENTS TO SUPPORT PAVEMENT DESIGN THEORIES

In this paper attention is paid to the testing of pavement design theories by means of scale models. The structure and operation data of a circular test track are described and the reliability of the measuring results, the required quality of the pavement model, the instrumentation and the advantages of model tests over experiments on the road are discussed. Several measuring methods such as deflection, strain gauge, earth pressure and displacement measurements are dealt with. The principle, apparatus, test and calibration procedure, interfering factors and the sensibility of inductive displacement measurements are described. Results of displacement measurements are compared with the elastic multi layer theory. (TRRL)
