INTERMODAL TRANSPORT IN PRESENT DAY OPERATIONAL REALITY

IL TRASPORTO COMBINATO NELLA REALTA OPERATIVA ATTUALE

The freight transport modes considered in this article are road, rail and sea, and intermodal transport is defined as that during which there is no breaking down of the freight load and in which the entire freight unit can be integrally transferred from one mode to the other. A review of road-rail and road-sea transport in Europe includes a description of investment policies, container and trailer handling methods (swap bodies, ufr, kangaroo, mc22 and roro services), and administration procedures. Some legislative and standardisation problems are also discussed. This paper was presented at the 2nd conference on "the problems of freight transport and distribution" varese, Italy, 1978. (TRRL)
