THE ROLE OF CRUSHED ROCK IN PAVEMENTS IN A WET ENVIRONMENT

The requirements of the Department of Main Roads, New South Wales, for fine crushed rock, water-bound macadam and graded macadam are outlined by reference to standard specifications and test methods. The use of the Texas triaxial test to quantify the moisture susceptibility of base materials and the use of repeated load triaxial test to define the elastic stress/strain behaviour of base materials is described. After reviewing the methods by which water can enter the road pavement by infiltration through shoulders and surfacing, the effect of water on base materials, particularly on pore pressure and soil suction, is briefly discussed (a).
