VILLENEUVE-SAINT-GEORGES MARSHALLING YARD--MODERNIZATION OF SHUNTING OPERATIONS

After giving a short history of the Villeneuve-Saint-Georges marshalling yard in the suburbs south of Paris, the author describes the recently installed automatic shunting devices, automatic switch controls, automatic retarders, the operating centres and the technical centres. In his conclusion he argues that the high level performance of these installations justifies bringing them into general use, which is being done on the SNCF in all intermediary marshalling yards.
