COMPARATIVE OBSERVATIONS ON NEW RAILWAY LINES (NBS) IN EUROPE AND JAPAN

VERGLEICHENDE BETRACHTUNG UEBER NEUBAUSTRECKEN (NBS) IN EUROPA UND JAPAN

Starting from a basic standpoint valid for all new railway lines, several principles are examined: development of projects, questions of track alignment, equipment of lines, and the relative number of bridges and tunnels on different Railways. The construction costs per kilometer for new lines are virtually identical on the DB and Japanese National Railways. The differences in operating (passenger traffic or mixed traffic) stem from the structure of the existing networks and the volume of traffic aimed at, together with profitability considerations.
