INTERMODALISM AND INTEGRATED TRANSPORT COMPANIES IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA
Since piggybacking operations require a high degree of intermodal cooperation, it is likely that a relaxation of regulatory restrictions on the ownership of intermodal transport companies would lead to more use of piggybacking in the United States. This hypothesis is explored by developing analytical models of vertical and horizontal integration and by comparing the levels of intermodal use in the United States, which does not permit intermodal ownership, and Canada, which does. Both the theoretical and empirical analyses indicate that formation of intermodal transport companies should lead to greater use of piggybacking and related intermodal operations.(a)
