ASSESSMENT OF TUNNEL BORING MACHINE PERFORMANCE
The article evaluates data obtained from rock tunnel boring projects in Europe and the USA in which different types of tunnel boring machines (TBM) carried out excavations in a range of rock types and geological conditions. In order to obtain the maximum progress rate with hard rock disc tunnel boring machines it is important that the machines be selected according to geological conditions. Data presented predicts rate of rock penetration for a range of TBM and rock types. To determine the relationship between rock properties and penetration rates for specific machine types, correlations are presented for the Demag TBM 34-38 and Robbins 123/133 3.5 M diameter machines.
