Union Pacific undertook a modernization of its car department in 1972. The program has involved upgrading of repair facilities, implementing of a business management system and initiating a human resources development program. Shop facilities have been mechanized and centralized. The computerized management system called Car Maintenance Cost System (CMCS) is not only automating costing, budgeting and billing but also is providing car histories for engineering analysis. Training and management techniques are also coming in for added attention.
