Status of Alcohol-Impaired Driving in Canada

This report looks at trends in alcohol-impaired driving in Canada. It also discusses enforcement of impaired driving laws, the amount of impaired driving cases in the court system, and public concern about drinking and driving in relation to other road safety issues. It finds that although drunk driving in Canada has declined over the last ten years, it is a complex social issue that needs to be addressed especially in light of the initiative to legalize cannabis. Legalizing cannabis is expected to produce an increase in impaired driving based on other jurisdictions' experiences. It is suggested that administrative strategies; sanctions, such as, ignition interlocks and remedial programs; and criminal prosecution be considered to continue to reduce the number of alcohol-impaired drivers.
