GRAVEL-BALLAST COLUMNS - LOADING TESTS AND FINITE ELEMENT CALCULATIONS

The soil stabilization processes of vibroflotation and gravel-ballast columns can be very competitive in a large number of cases. Loading tests were carried out on two of the ballast columns of a 13000 linear metre construction site; one of the columns was cemented in its upper part. Non-destructive measurements were made during loading. It was observed that the critical load was 50 metric tons, identical for both types of column with lower settlements for the cemented column. The performance/cost ratio is markedly more favourable for the standard (non-cemented) ballast column. Simultaneously a theoretical model was conducted with the help of finite element method. Data processing techniques were used to investigate the field of stresses and displacements in the columns and the development of plasticity with increased loading. (TRRL)
