THE BIOMECHANICS OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING PEDESTRIANS

BIOMECHANIK DES FUSSGAENGERUNFALLS

This study deals with the evaluation of over 300 examples of accidents involving pedestrians and provides a survey of research in this field to date. Unanswered questions and established assumptions are dealt with. The prime object of future research should be consideration of the following main areas: (1) the compilation of a register of measures for the protection of pedestrians. Agreements on requirements and the fixing of minimum objectives. (2) investigations into the connections between the parameters affecting an accident involving pedestrians. (3) the claims and the solution of conflicting statements when considering the two groups mainly affected; "old people" and "children up to 14 years". (4) the relation between primary vehicle impact and the type of road impact. (5) the requirements for pedestrian dummies - their size and construction and possible new developments. (6) the standardisation of methods of testing for accidents involving pedestrians.
