THE ADAPTATION OF PNEUMATIC RUBBER TYRES TO PASSENGER CARS

DIE ANPASSUNG LUFTGEFUELLTER GUMMIREIFEN AN PERSONENKRAFTWAGEN

Following remarks on the development of tyres, their function and the forces to which they are subject, the choice of design of tyre is described. Although the relevant dimensions are laid down in the standards, there are no regulations governing the construction of the tyre, the composition of the rubber, the cord material or the tread profile. From such freedom in design there result tyres of differing properties which makes it necessary to subject each make to close scrutiny and to examine their suitability for a particular vehicle. The actual adaptation of the tyres to a vehicle commences therefore with actual driving tests. Here one must distinguish between subjective function tests which concern driving behaviour and comfort, and driving tests with safety aspects, in which slip on wet surfaces, braking behaviour, wear resistance, blow-out behaviour and behaviour under load are investigated. The tests are described in detail. Finally there is a discussion on the solution of problems which arise when a vehicle is already in series production.
