ACCIDENTS ON ROAD BENDS FROM THE PSYCHOLOGICAL VIEWPOINT
KURVENUNFAELLE AUS PSYCHOLOGISCHER SICHT
In the case of accidents at bends in roads free from any constructional faults the explanation moves away from one of a technical nature towards a psychological problem. The following points must be stressed: (1) the site of the accident should be considered to see whether the length of road in terms of the demand upon the driver coincides with the design speed; (2) the possibility of optically deceptive phenomena on bends in sags or on summits should be heeded. The effect of alcohol is of particular importance in this respect; (3) the possible effect of transverse acceleration upon the psycho-physical efficiency of the driver should be taken into consideration when making a judgment; (4) in singular accident situations, particularly with straight-ahead movements or missing skid or braking marks on bends, the possibility of suicidal intentions should be investigated. Investigation and explanatory methods are described.
